| Hanes named President of Dallas Home Builder's Association

Gaylord Lloyd Hanes, Hobart native
(and regular reader of Hobart
Democrat-Chief),was recently inducted as President of the Home Builder's Association of
Greater Dallas. This is the third largest Builder's Association in the United States, with
2,000 active members. Hanes was born in Hobart and was reared
by his grandparents, Sam and Rhoda Hanes. Sam homesteaded 10 miles northeast of Hobart and
was active in the early days of Hobart. His grandson still owns the family homestead.
Hanes joined the US Navy when he was 17 and served in the Pacific during World War II. After
the war, he graduated from Oklahoma State University and became Assistant county agent at
Cordell, Oklahoma.

In 1952, he was transferred to Stillwater as Extension Agronomist for the
state.

He received his Ph.D. in Soil Physics from Louisiana State
University in 1960 and returned to OSU as Head of the Plant Science
Department. Later, he became Vice President of Occidental Chemical Company, a world
wide manufacturing industry. During the 1970's, Dr. Hanes and his
wife, Jeane, owned and operated an 800-head cattle ranch near Mt. Pleasant, Texas.
In 1980, he became a builder of large luxury homes in Houston, Texas. Since
1990, he has been a developer of subdivisions and continues to build about 30 homes per year
near Dallas, Texas. Hanes also owns a commercial construction company that specializes in
building medical clinics. In addition to being President of the
Home Builder's Association of greater Dallas, Hanes serves on the Board of Directors for the
Texas Association of Home Builders (10,000 members). He also serves on the Board of the National
Association of Home Builders (220,000 members). The Republican Majority
of the US House of Representatives named Gaylord Hanes as Texas Businessman of the Year for 2003.
Hanes is active in Rotary International, but his favorite activity
is teaching a 75 member Sunday School Class at the First Methodist Church in Waxahachie, Texas.
